L’Istituto Romano della Società di Görres è stato fondato nel 1888, primo degli istituti della «Görres-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaft im katholischen Deutschland», istituita come associazione cattolica per la promozione degli studi. L’Istituto ha sede nel Palazzo del Collegio Teutonico in Vaticano, col quale conserva una biblioteca di 45.000 volumi ca. con preferenza per l’archeologia cristiana e la storia della Chiesa (storia dei papi e dei concili, storia delle diocesi in Germania e Austria, liturgia, ecc.). L’Istituto ospita un certo numero di borsisti i quali svolgono le loro ricerche con preferenza nell’Archivio Vaticano o nella Biblioteca Vaticana. L’Istituto pubblica, insieme col Collegio, dal 1887 la «Römische Quartalschrift für christliche Altertumskunde und Kirchengeschichte» (con supplementi). Durante l’anno accademico si svolgono conferenze pubbliche e convegni internazionali.

The Roman Institute of the Goerres Society was founded in 1888 as the first of several foreign institutes of the “Görres-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaft im katholischen Deutschland” which is an organisation of mostly catholic accademics and counts today about 3.000 members. The Roman Institute is dedicated to studies of church history and christian archaeology and is located in the German College “Campo Santo Teutonico” in the Vatican. The library has about 45.000 volumes, mostly church history (popes, councils, german dioceses, liturgy) and archaeology.The Institute gives post graduate-fellowships especially for those who do their studies in den Vatican Archives or in the Vatican Library. The Institute publishes since 1887 the review “Römische Quartalschrift für christliche Altertumskunde und Kirchengeschichte” (with supplements). During the accademic year it organises conferences and public lectures.
